A program with Super Nanny Joe Frost was on at the weekend, and while she helped a couple of families with their problem children, there was a darker side to the program.

Joe and a ‘professor’ took 40 12 yr old boys and sat them all down in front of laptops, where 20 played a ‘violent war game’ and 20 played a football game. Then they were shown real footage of new stories showing violence, that their parents had given the ok to watch.
During all this their heart rates were monitored and apparently those that had played 20 min of ‘violent’ games heart rates remained the same, while the football players hearts went up, thus apparently proving the desensitising effect on children from ‘violent’ games.
They also hauled in each child for a chat and purposefully knocked over a cup of pens to see if they would help pick them up, and we are shown that all the boys that played football offered to pick them up and that the ‘violent’ players didn’t, but the voice over confirmed that ONLY 40% of the ‘violent’ players did help.
Hold on 40%?? That’s almost half of the 20 kids, so roughly 10 ‘violent’ players did actually help.

Also not taken in consideration is these children’s background, their upbringing? What they had recently been watching/playing? Have they spent the last two years playing ‘violent’ games? Are they made to sit and watch the news, so they can get an appreciation of the world? Do they watch violent 12 cert films, such as transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, or the Harry potter films? None of which are mentioned in the program. Nor is it mentioned whether any of the kids tested have normal access to 15 cert films/games, or 18 cert films/games.

This hardly seems scientific and didn’t seem to have anything to do with the rest of the program? Both children had nothing to do with this subject… one was a 4-5 yr old who was difficult at feeding times, and the other was a young girl (about 9) who was so upset with her perceived Ugliness that she plastered herself with makeup (mainly because she read tons of the glossy mags with the perfect females in them).

Now Joe sorted out both these families, and she took the nine yr old to a studio, had a load of pics of Joe taken, then they watch a graphic engineer spend 4 hours touching up the pic. It really worked on the girl and she no longer felt she needed to be like the airbrushed celebs and models… fantastic!!! Well done.

But why the need to attack ‘violent’ games I have no idea. Leave them alone, or if you are going to bring violence into question, get rid of the news and films and documentaries. At least discuss all depiction of violence rather than try to focus o a single example of it.

if your looking at the stars, you will miss the manholes

I think that the average child will see more death and destruction on the news than they do in games.

I would be more interested in seeing what a full psychological profile of 30,000 children over a period of 25 years would bring up. Since you need around 30,000 persons for an accurate statistical reading of personality.
