I am feeling more balanced and I am busy story-boarding the 'Croc and Pop' cartoons, though I am doing 2 lots one for RBL County Newsletter and the other for the Newark Advertiser.

So I am taking topics that are at the forefront at the moment and putting my wierd way of thinking into the stories.

At the same time I am writing and trying to put together a short story; though it is now some 70 pages and am still writing so think I may get a book or two out of The Crocodile Chronicles.

Then there is 'Journey' which is an art group that I am treasurer for and all the group work for that.

As well I am trying to put together another Journey Group but this is for gardeners.

I cannot remember if I have given the background to the Journey.

So, Journey is about taking people who have been discharged from mental health or NHS and is a self-run, self-funded, self-help art group; it is a platform for social interaction, confidence-building, increasing one's skills, inviting established artists and carrying out group projects as well as individual works with a view to putting on an exhibition every now and then (2 to 5 years).

Now 'Journey Too' (working name) will be the same but it will be allotment-based and will take people who have lost their placements with the Social Services, NHS, run allotments, and who want to carry on and continue with the social side of life as well as doing an Annual Cropping Show with the Newark Allotments and Gardens Society.

This is going to take a bit of persuasion but it will be passed because I SAY SO - blasted crocodile - but essentially Oddenstein is correct, I do seem to be able to get people to do things for me.

The eBay shop is languishing but I do not have any finished work to sell, so I may just sell the odd thing, now and then, and learn how to mount and frame my work before progressing further.

There must be easy ways to do the framing and mounting, I have a full workbench in my spare room and could build the necessary jigs to make a production line possible.

If I do cartoons to the optimum size for mounting and framing, rather than doing odd sizes of cartoons, then this makes more sense and it will be easier to do prints from the original.

Photography-wise I am at a bit of a loose end because it is still winter here and there are no flowers or insects around - I do macro pictures of flowers and insects, birds, animals - dormice and pipistrelle bats, hedgehogs, badgers and foxes - and people. Also do landscapes and use these as reference pictures for my own oil paintings.

I am still researching the Names of the Fallen of Newark, though the task is now much harder because I am dealing with 3rd, 4th, 5th etc hand information and most of it is half-remembered from stories 50 years ago.

However, I am slowly reducing my big list of names and we shall get down to a workable list of real people who shall be added to the War Memorial.

I am also getting involved with the Friends of Newark Cemetery, largely because of my work with the War Memorial.

As a knock-on of the memorial I am also collecting and photographing the other memorials around and in Newark and getting them ready to send off to the Roll of Honour website -
http://www.roll-of-honour.com/ -

So I try to spend a few hours on a Tuesday in the library with the micro-fiches and slowly work my way through a lot of extraneous information that is interesting and provides a wider picture of what was happening, it also gives me information about plaques and small memorials to specific groups of men and/or women who served their country and died, e.g. postal workers, town hall staff, rail workers, miners, boat men, etc.

Still trying to do my flat out and get stuff moved around and the dust on the floor is approaching an inch thick so it should not get much thicker, at least according to a British writer, who lived in New York, gay, male, famous for his blue rinsed hair, can't remember his name, but I have no doubt that I shall awaken with it on my lips at some ghastly hour of the morning.

I have bought myself a new vacuum cleaner so the dust is on a warning order to move.

I have a brand new double bed to build and I cannot do that until I have sorted out the computers and the wardrobes, because they are in the main bedroom - not enough space.

So I am a bit busy, which is the way I like it, there is a great sense of achieving things and a 'buzz' in my brain and being and I feel very alive and full of energy.

Chris Green

Thanks for telling us about 'Journey'. What groups like this do is so important. It is good to raise their profile. We have an excellent group down here - art etc. However the little funding they did recieve from the council was withdrawn last year, now they are struggling. Folk are pulling together so hopefully they will be able to carry on - they are very determined!!

Well 'Journey' has some funding for rent on the art studio for the first year.

We have 1,000 from Newark and Sherwood District Council, which is 'seed' money, we are going to use 500 for match funding.

We expect the art group to be self-funding inside 3 years and we shall do this by subscriptions and selling our work.

We set up Journey with the specific aim of being fully self-funding within our first 3 years, this allows us access to a wider set of funds and we can tap into main-stream arts grants and Arts Council help.

I'm setting up Journey Two, which will be based at the Allotments and will be similar to Journey but for those discharged from the allotment and gardening schemes.

I'm also just become a member of the Friends of Newark Cemetery, which ties in nicely with the War Memorial.

I'm also going to join the Newark Civic Trust, which ties in with the War Memorial as well.

I have written some 70 pages of draft 1 for The Crocodile Chronicles, which I am going to save, but not use, because I think that I can widen this into a full-on book exploring me, my disablements and the crocs.

Format will be typed with line drawings and a small section of photographs.

I shall promote those things which are important to me, this site and The Legion.

Well 19th January and it is now 35 years since I caught a simfire laser unit on my shoulders and back, after it slipped while being demounted at the end of an exercise, at the tank washdown, near Belsen railway sidings.

We were moving our equipment onto the next regiment to go onto the Luneberg Heath Training Area, this was the prototype stuff and very heavy and mega-expensive.

It took two of you to handle it on the ground, never mind trying to get it off a gunbarrel and eight feet down to the ground, because this beast was partly mounted on the turret, it was so big; nowadays there is a little pod on the end of the gun barrel that weighs a few ounces.

Anyway that injury plus hitting several holes while crewing as gunner and doing travelling stabiliser battle runs - this is the days of a wire and rubber headset and a soft beret and a thin band of rubber on the top of the site headrest - so when you hit a hole and the gun crashed up and down, one's neck went with it, and so did one's lower back.

The seat is smaller than an average thin bloke's backside, slightly sprung, a small backrest on a 14 inch high pin, and the tank commander's boots jammed into your back and his knees clipping your shoulders.

The gun is to your left and is continually moving up and down, the tank is swivelling left, right underneath you and you have to have an awareness of which direction the vehicle is travelling in order to know what your off shot distance has to be.

Your world is a tiny corner of turret, surrounded by boxes and controls, there are no soft surfaces, so as you travel across country your body is thrown backwards, forwards, side to side, up and down; very exciting but it wrecks your back.

I first became aware of being in pain that January day in 1972, it is a long road since then.

A knock-on effect of the autism is that I do not know where any pain is - I cannot explain where it hurts, just that it does hurt and mostly it centres on my tummy - so I had a largely negative medical history in the army, with some unfortunate remarks from the MOs.

Later in my service I transferred from the tank park to serving in HQ Squadron as NCO i/c the Regimental Aid Post, which meant travelling around in a tracked ambulance - FV432 - which had even less padding than the gunner's seat and still wearing the wire and rubber headsets.

So my back took one hell of a pounding, though I did thoroughly enjoy every second of it all and I would do it all again, if I could. Grin.

Must be winter - the radiators are going full-blast and so is the wind, one is permanently drafty and the odour of spirits long passed the live-by date emanate from the floors and walls. Crocodiles huddle under blankets and as close to the radiator as they can get and a fight breaks out between 2 crocs and a rhino - the rhino wins and smugly sits surrounded by a large pile of warm-blooded elephants and the crocs slink off and sulk under the radiator on a one inch thick bed of dust.

Oddment clanks passed, his chain stitch clanging and clunking on the carpet and wooden floorboards, he has been busy on the internet looking at chain mail suits to go with his chain stitch and whether or not he can do a cheap day return on the chain stitch and go for a full suit of chain mail.
