I fear that there will come a time when no one marches on Remembrance Sunday and the various monuments will become disused and abused by man and nature.

Who then will remember them and complete the decades old covenant of remembrance?

Hello Chris, The attendance at Sundays parade here in Oswestry, Shropshire, was biggger than ever, many more young people in attendance, and the crowds seemed larger than last year.May the trend continue, never the less the danger is there as you suggest Chris. Taffy,

My older children (6 + 4) came home from school a few days before Remembrance Sunday and asked for money for Poppies as they could buy them at school. I asked them why they thought they where selling Poppies and what they ment, but they didn't have a clue! Come to think of it I recall Poppies being sold at school (even secondary school) and not knowing what they represented. I remember asking my family and being given brief answers and so never totally understood until I met my husband.
So my children where glued to the T.V on Remembrance Day, difficult to explain to a 6 and 4 year old the reasons behind it particularly as daddy is a soldier (don't ant to woryy them) but I did my best. As they grow older I will make them more aware of the reasons behind it and hopefully they will have great respect for Remberance Day and the monuments.
Maybe if children where educated about it at school as well as home, particularly when selling the Poppies there would be greater respect and gratitude to the people we remember on Remembrance Day?

Well said Lisa, a sad day when this lands children become ignorant of the reason behind Remembrance and the Poppy.
I do not envy your balancing act of educating your two with Dad a serving soldier.

We, our children, their children and their grand children must keep the fire of Remembrance burning. For those who gave, those who now give and those who are yet to give, we WILL remember them, always!

Which is why I am running a poetry competition in our locala area - remembrance is not just for 11 Nov - it's for every day. I am going to give it my best shot!

Best wishes

I do poetry recitals in Newark with various poetry and performance arts groups and tend to recite my military poetry and I try to get people to think more about the world around them and the reasons why they have the freedom to make decisions that often seem to be at odds with what my parents and grandparents fought for.

I write public letters to various organisations and newspapers and generally take part in any activity that will educate and remind people of those who gave their lives for our country.

But Remembrance is the public side of being an ex-service person, there is the largely hidden world of those maimed or severely injured and children should be educated about this as well.
