I met two ladies from Glasgow

On a bench in the middle of York

I’d just started eating a sandwich

When they sat down and started to talk

I jokingly offered a sandwich

But they’d eaten a short time before

And though my offer was tempting

They felt that they couldn’t eat more

The two of them told me their story

Their friendship had spanned forty years

After meeting at maternity classes

They had shared their hopes and their fears

Their life, like many before them

Was humble but filled with much pride

Staying at home with their children

That modern mums soon would deride

And thanks to some changes in fortune

Leisure time now filled their days

Travelling the country together

Seeing life in many new ways

We sat there swapping our stories

My sandwich untouched and dry

I pondered about making new friends

How sometimes you don’t have to try

With cheery farewells they both left

I sat there content with my life

I ate up the rest of my picnic

Then set off to meet with my wife
