NORTHERN TOWN

Born in a northern town was he
Amid the grime of industry
Working at the blacksmith’s fire
His life becoming worse than dire
He tried so hard to hide his rage
At slaving for a pittance wage
Un-educated, church - mouse poor
He knew his life was meant for more
And so he worked each lonely night
Devouring books so he just might
Be best prepared for that new time
When he could leave this dirt and grime
He would not let life beat him down
And keep him in this northern town
He told no-one, not closest friend
Of all the effort he would spend
To gain the knowledge he would need
To end the reign of rich men's greed
Whilst others drank and stayed out late
He read his books, mapped out his fate
No shabby cottage, kids and wife
His plans were for a different life
At work he moved from post to post
Befriending those who knew the most
Until he knew just how things ran
And how he could perfect his plan
So very soon the owner saw
That he was different - could do more
His attitude was good and strong
He'd help the firm to move along
He built the business, made it grow
The boss was pleased, he did not know
Just how he made the profits mount
Or how he kept the firm's account
As long profits made him rich
The boss was happy, saw no hitch
Too late he saw that he was gone
The saviour he depended on
Where was the man who'd change the world
Lead his campaign, banner unfurled
Where was this man who hated greed
Who worked so hard, who felt the need
To change the life of men so poor
Free them from greed for evermore
But even he could not succeed
To fight and win against pure greed

An inspirational journey full of high ambition. Heady ideals ultimately undermined and thwarted as cold reality bites. Reads well...
