V E Day 75th Anniversary

Memories are wonderful
If at times you need to recall
An instance from your earlier life
Which you remember over all
As children we were taken to the Seaside
On the day of Armistice and hostilities did cease
Leaving home in the morning during wartime
Returning home in the evening sunburnt in a country at Peace
And this is the case with V E Day
Now 75 years ago
When people partied in the streets
And on under the lamplightís glow
At last World War 2 had come to an end
Celebrations were called for this day
People elated after 5 years of War
And emotions they would display
Thousands all gathered in Trafalgar Square
Singing and dancing till dark
Military people and civilians in jubilation
Peace once again they would remark
But for children and local residents
Lots of activities were planned
Streets were closed to traffic
Chairs and tables set and laid
With all kinds of food for everyone
Sandwiches fruit cakes and lemonade
Our Piano was placed in the street
And popular music was played
My Dad ordered an ice cream dispenser
On the back of a coal lorry displayed
A bonfire was burning in the road
Fireworks set off out for people to browse
And I remember a Catherine Wheel flying past
And landing inside a ladyís blouse
Whilst all this was going on
An Australian Soldier came passing by
And he was greeted with a pint of beer
And a nice big apple pie
Singing and dancing went on until late
The streetís filled with happiness and laughter
All this is all now just memories
From 75 years ago in the hereafter.
