Hello Lisa,

A way of allowing your child to integrate is thru the use of art as a shared symbolic language, often one needs to find something that one is good at, in order to get the confidence to say to others, "I'm different, so what does it matter if I am."

My grandfather used to take me out on walks in the country and we would look at the flowers and then find them in his pocket book and we would learn the everyday names as well as the latin or greek ones.

I think that I am lucky, in that I was diagnosed in my fifties, because it was my family which basically said, "OK, this is the reality, this is you, now get on with life."

I was born in 1953 and joined the army in 1971, so the work done by Wing at Cambridge and Tony Attwood in Australia in the mid to late 80s was still in the future.

Now there is, perhaps, an over-emphasis on diagnosis and special status, rather than viewing each person as an individual with the potential to go far if their strengths are tapped into at an early age and they are allowed to be fledglings and to grow and fly in their unique ways.

Yes, it would be very nice for me and all autistics to be social, but the reality is that we are not, so rather than viewing this as terrible, why not look for an advantage from this, is there something that she likes to do and which could be done when she has break time?

Is there someone that she has an attachment for among the children or adults, in that she shows a preference to be near that person as opposed to others?

Has anyone explained to her what the purpose of all this running around is?

Has anyone explained to her what break-time is?

Never, ever, presume that an autistic person 'knows' things; usually we don't and we are waiting for someone to explain the activity or session to us, in simple terms, so that we understand what is happening.

There, that is enough information for now. Grin.

Chris Green

Hi Chris,
I knew nothing about Asperger's Syndrome until I read your piece. It was fascinating because I work (as a Gofer, I hasten to add) in a big, general FE college which has a large contingent of Foundation Studies pupils who have a whole range of special needs. I like to learn about their needs the better to be able assist if I need to, but I find the text book stuff goes over my head a bit. Your explanation about Asperger's however, was the sort of thing I can grasp and you never know, it may come in useful. Thanks.
Regards
Bob

I am in the process of putting together the people in order to get an allotment for people who have been discharged from NHS/Mental Health services and who have been involved with the Mental Health Inclusion Team, here in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England (for all those americans who seem to think I must only be writing about their place), and who have been working in the gardens and allotments.

We have already started a group on the mainstream Arts side and this is working well.

We have to find the funding, in the first instant and also provide infrastructure in the form of seating, a toilet, a secure brick store, etc..

I am looking forward to this one because it ties in with many of my other groups and organisations such as the Friends of Newark Cemetery, Newark Civic Trust, Disability Information Group: Integration Through Technology, Croc-around-Britain, Newark Allotments and Gardens Society and the Royal Horticultural Society.

There is funding in the offing from the BBC and this should be through in about a month, unless more paperwork is required.

After that it is a matter of organising the troops and focusing people on the design issues and the heavy work of preparation, building and preparing the soil; not to mention the painstaking removal of rock and glass from the beds.

One area, which is low lying I am hoping that we can put in a wild-life pond, while another area is ideal for hedgehogs (they eat slugs and snails).

I'll keep you posted on this.

Following lobbying and the intervention of my MP, Patrick Mercer, Nottinghamshire County Council are going to appoint a Manager dealing specifically with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Adults and they will be providing provisions for all adults in the County.

Also there will be an Officer dealing specifically with Asperger's Syndrome because of the high numbers of adults with this condition in the County.

A lot of people from the NAS writing a lot of letters to Parliament and MPs, there will be an Amendment Act passed which requires Councils to provide these facilities.

Notts CC is just getting in, in front of the Act.

I am now starting to open up about an incident and a following chain of events from my childhood, it is I suppose a safe time now as all the participants and anyone affected is now dead.

Christmas Day 1958, age 5, I was being looked after by a friend of the family who was a member of a church, I was raped and the ensuing damage to penis, genitals and anus was put down to my 'falling' and landing on a metal grid, which I had indeed been forcible dropped on.

This continued for some 5 years and he was caught in the act by Mum.

I can still remember those words, "Who will believe a crip kid, who lives in a fantasy world."

SCOPE has been researching the sexual abuse of disabled children and adults and believes that any statistics do not reflect the actual scale of the problem, since most of those chosen as victims are not able to communicate what is, or was, happenning to them.

For me, I think that it exagerated my autism and forced me deeper into the private and exclusive world of my mind.

In a way autism kept me sane and kept me as a functioning person after the abuse stopped.

Speaking from a personal point of view I find Chris's post above sad, shocking and upsetting. I have to say I had an idyllic childhood and whilst I am conscious of this and thankful for this I think I am sometimes not conscious enough of the darker experiences of others.

Chris I am so pleased that you feel comfortable enough to share your innermost feelings in here and I hope with all my heart that you find comfort in doing so in a place filled with people who care very much about each other.

The future dream of our organisation is to employ people to professionally counsel those who need it. Whilst we are perhaps focused on those who were affected by war we will always be ready to help anyone in need.

I think you have immense emotional courage Chris and your drive for betterment and progress is an example to all.

My thanks for your kind comments, but praise is really not relevent to someone with any form of autism, we just ell it as it is and it felt the right time to put it into here.

There are other elements of my life that have been perhaps, more violent, but they have always been by personal choice.
