My own little act on the day is to raise a glass of port to those who have gone. We did it every Remembrance Sunday just before we marched on so I like to keep the tradition going.

If there's any football played on the day, the players should all wear the (POPPY) with (PRIDE). And tell those who may object to 'go and take a 'running march'!

Embrace the (POPPY)!

(HAPPY REMEMBRANCE DAY) to ALL.

Cheers Mac! I'll drink to that!

Darryl.

Hello and cheers Mac. I would also drink to that.Mac sorry to have been so idle of late, i try to read everthing, but am unable to contribute as much as i would wish. my writing seems to be getting extremely slow, and i spend too much time trying to paint something worthwhile. Best to all. taffy

Armistice Day.

It’s 11 am on Armistice Day
A truly reverent scene
Row upon row of yesterday’s Soldiers
Veterans now but just as keen
As they answered the call as young men & Women
To fight for the right to be free
From the possible threat of Dictators
Stealing their country’s liberty
Year after year since 1918
ex Servicemen young and old
Return here to the Cenotaph
To remember fallen colleagues bold
They march so proud, with their heads held high
Chair bound and invalids too
To honour the dead and fallen
Brothers in arms through and through
Every possible Service represented there
Thinking as one, in accord
There were those who saved their homeland
Those who fought terrorism abroad
With their heads to the right, as they pass the Queen
To give the time-honoured salute
Today they’re here to pay homage
From the Veterans to the raw recruit
They’ve come to a halt and there’s silence
For the Service and then the wreath’s are laid
Then as their heads and standards are lowered
Each in his own way prayed
In unison with the lone Bugler
As he blew the Last Post
Many with a tear on their faces
Remembering their personal Ghost
Of battles past when colleagues they’d lost
Tho’ never far from their mind
And on an occasion such as this
Comfort and peace they can find
The call now comes for “ Attenshun”
The Bearers their Standards now raise
The Old Soldiers march off in formation
To conclude one of Britain’s proudest Military Displays.

I could never match your standards Dennis but my own simple offering below. Dave

National Memorial
A strategic gap between the walls
For those who answered “Duty Calls”
A shaft of light breaks through to say
Tis the “Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day”
Comrades Young and Comrades Old
Comrades shy and Comrades Bold
From Wars long gone or Modern times
Loved ones lost behind enemy lines
In Desert Lands or distant shores
Our quiet prayers in silence pause
Those lost at sea in oceans deep
Our Treasured Thoughts, of these, we keep
Years gone by and Years quite new
Others have joined the “”Sacred Few”
The fallen of conflict in foreign parts
Their names carved in Stone and in our Hearts
Read these Names with Deep Regret
We Honour them now, “Lest we Forget”

This year, 2012, I have left The Royal British Legion, though I am still a Poppy Collector: on Remembrance Sunday I shall take our Regimental wreath to the new War Memorial in Newark Cemetery and shall lay it there at 11am.

At 11am on the 11th I shall be collecting for the Poppy Appeal and shall observe the 2 minutes silence as an extension of my own silence.

The joys of lack of memory, turned out that the 11th was the Sunday.

We had a short and private ceremony in Newark Cemetery beside the War Memorial with the Deputy Mayor and the Chair of The Friends of Newark Cemetery - a short speech, a prayer and Laurence Binyon's verse.

There were relations of the fallen and some children and we each laid our memento mori, in no particular order: it had more meaning than the political jamboree at the Parish Church and memorial garden.

Afterwards we walked around the cemetery to the Polish war graves section and I did some sketches of the people and landscape.

Later I had a bottle of Old Peculiar and raised my glass to 'Absent Friends'.

Every day should be rememebrace day,not just 11 November: they gave their lives for us, the least we can do is remember them.

The older one gets the more one remembers, until all one does is to remember.

Living life to the full tends to be for the young.
