I have not contributed to your website before but have looked at it on many occasions and my Yr9 students sometimes use it for research when we study war poetry. In a former life I was an Infantry Officer in the British Army. I served in The Rifles (and before that The Royal Green Jackets) and I saw action in Iraq in 2007 with 4 Rifles (TELIC 10) and Afghanistan in 2009 with 2 Rifles (HERRICK 10). I left the army in April 2010 and am now working as an English teacher in Sussex.

I started writing poetry almost as soon as I got back from Afghanistan in late 2009, predominantly as a means of catharsis and I certainly never planned on sharing my poems with anyone. However, after reading some of the poems on your site, I realised how helpful it was to know that others struggled with their experiences and I drew great comfort from the messages that many of those poems contained. I fear my subject matter has yet to get much beyond the "pity of war" but perhaps that will come with time. I enclose a few poems that I have written over the last couple of years for your perusal - I don't know if any of them are any good but please use them as you see fit.

Best wishes,

Ed Poynter

Welcome Ed and thanks for your introduction. Helps to place the person and the poetry. Connections - I also reside in Sussex! Are you East or West?
No need to apologise for your poetry being what it is at this time - for now it is right for you - if it wants to change it will in its own time. Go with it for now because your poems are very strong - at there peak,
Jan
