Silence November 1918

Silence now, not a gun or scream to hear
Just rats scurrying around our feet.
they say the carnage is at an end but not for us
Our war has just begun, another war to defeat.

This war has left our minds and bodies broken,
we return to our loved ones, four years gone by.
limbs gone, lungs burnt, blind, we could walk, clap, see,
now we just sit looking or hearing others walking by

We all now fight to live again.
We lay our heads down and remember
Our brothers and friends that are left back there,
their family and loved ones will never see them again.

Markers show where they fell, a cross or stone
A field somewhere a corner of a land we fought to save
our brothers in arms never to return again
still side by side, joined as one and never alone.

Just boys, men and women who did their duty
across the sea where we fought to defend,
we were those men that stood side by side,
and for us, we know our war will never end.

George Potten

In memory of all the soldiers, airmen, sailors, nurses, Doctors both here and across the world that came to our aid in all conflicts. Who believed in right.

The impact of war on body and mind are brought home by this moving and insightful poem. That another battle awaits to be fought to recover some equilibrium of mind is a message, Silence November 1918, lands with an equally forceful punch...
